“If we could just slow down enough to consider what is true and real…”

On a recent day, late in the evening, I was returning from walking the dogs along the ridge road on the hill behind the retreat house. Nearing the point when the road begins its steep descent, there is an opening of the woods to the western sky created by a power easement. The view reveals the sharp, roller coaster slopes and the valley below, as well as rising ridgelines several miles in the distance. It is a breathtaking vista at any time, but on this particularly dusky evening it commanded me to stop and experience God's colorful creativity.

At the base of this scene was the dark deep green, almost black of grass and trees recently deprived of daylight. Covering this darkness was a cottony thick blanket of fog, beginning in blue grays and fading into gray white, then out of the fog and back to green. This time…. the lighter forest green of hills ascending from the valley floor. Then a hot pink band of sunset stretching across the horizon crowned by the mottled baby and gray blues of a cloudy evening sky.

I stood there for a while, the dogs wandering on ahead.

This moment of peering so intimately onto God's canvass while the Master Painter is at work is only one of many special moments at Cedar Hill. I love to share these with you, but nothing I can write can take the place of the personal experience. I hope you can join me here in this beautiful place for a retreat soon.
